Keeping fit is a key way to stay healthy. The NHS promotes walking as a popular low-impact exercise, working the cardiovascular system and burning off calories. Even 10 minutes a day can make a difference to your health. Picking up the pace, even for short spurts can increase the intensity of your walk. It’s always nicer if it’s shared experience.
Swimming is another low-impact sport that can be enjoyed at any age. Look for over 50’s swimming sessions at your local pool. King Edwards Pool in Sheffield has warm water sessions for those that don’t like being cold!
The main point is to make exercise a habit and part of your day or week.

I originally trained as a SEN(M), and worked in that sector caring for the elderly for around 9 years. After this I changed pathways and moved to administration work, being employed in both the NHS and private sectors at various stages of my career. Between 2002 to June 2017 I worked in a Fertility Clinic as Clinic Director, and then Quality lead providing a patient centered service. This was a key element of my job, and I enjoyed listening to patients and improving standards of service through patient feedback and audit.
It was through doing voluntary work though that I realized I wanted to work alongside people more directly again and offer them support in the community by forming a companionship service. I set this up in 2017 and have now established a befriending and support service for people at home that need help to remain independent.
